Collaboration is key!

In 2020 we partnered with KCA Deutag to create a new ‘Dropped Object’ interactive training video for their Land Rig division. The video aimed to increase knowledge of the issue, as well as highlight typical control measures. In addition to English – the end product is also available in Russian and Arabic.

Dropped Objects

Dropped Objects are a serious and very real threat – and the stats support that claim. In 2019 the UK HSE categorised dropped objects, referred to as ‘struck by incidents’ as the 3rd highest cause of injuries and fatalities across industry. In the USA, approximately 50,000 “struck by falling object” incidents are recorded by OSHA each year. That’s one injury caused by a dropped object every 10 minutes…

The cone

As we delved into the topic, we came across a raft of tools used within industry to help quantify and control dropped objects. The bulk of these tools are available from the good folk at the DROPS online resource centre. And that’s exactly where we came across the Cone of Exposure. The Cone of Exposure simply helps us answer the following questions: If this load were to fall, where would it land? Would it roll? Can it tip over?
