For those working in the energy sector, travel isn’t a luxury — it’s part of the job. Whether it’s a leadership rotation, a project mobilisation, or an offshore deployment, working globally often means navigating unfamiliar territory.

But travel today is more complex than ever, and with shifting geopolitical tensions, rising cyber threats, war, and new forms of crime emerging, situational awareness has never been more critical.

The risks you might not see coming

Some threats are obvious — theft, pickpocketing, or lost luggage. Others are much harder to anticipate.

Cybercrime is on the rise, with foreign travellers and business personnel increasingly targeted.

Public Wi-Fi, hotel networks, and even airport charging stations can leave your personal and corporate data wide open. “Juice jacking” — the theft of data via charging ports — is just one example of how attackers exploit moments when defences are down.

One of the fastest-growing cyber threats is sextortion — where individuals are coerced or manipulated into sharing explicit material, often under false pretences, and then blackmailed for money or silence. It’s a crime that can affect anyone, anywhere, and the consequences are severe.

In certain regions, armed carjackings or kidnap for ransom incidents are not uncommon. Nigeria, for example, reported over 3,600 abductions in a single 12-month period.

South Africa recorded more than 17,000 kidnappings in just one year. Often, these incidents aren’t random — foreign nationals and those in high-profile sectors like energy and infrastructure can be deliberately targeted.

But you don’t need to be operating in high-risk areas to be vulnerable. Even destinations like London and Paris now rank as global crime hotspots.

The world is becoming more hostile, and whether you’re travelling to a remote outpost or a major capital, the same principle applies: don’t let familiarity lead to complacency.

It all starts with situational awareness

A large part of safe travel is mental — not just where you go, but how you think when you get there. Situational awareness means being conscious of your surroundings, understanding local norms, and having the confidence to ask: What if?

What if there’s a protest? What if my driver isn’t who I thought they were? What if my medication is illegal here?

This mindset is at the heart of Cooper’s Colour Code — a framework originally developed for law enforcement that helps you stay in the right headspace: alert but not anxious, calm but ready.

It’s not about fear — it’s about preparation.

And preparation has never been more important.

Travellers have been detained abroad simply for carrying prescription medications that are legal at home but banned elsewhere. Others have faced serious penalties for breaching alcohol laws in dry countries. Once you arrive, it’s often too late to fix these mistakes.

Topics worth understanding before you go

To help travellers feel more prepared — and to better reflect the realities of global mobility — a digital learning programme was developed between Inverroy Crisis Management and Reuzer with input from former military, police, and crisis response professionals.

It offers practical, scenario-driven insight based on real-world experience. And it’s been shaped with high-risk industries like energy in mind.

The course is broken down into 10 focused modules, each designed to be visual, engaging, and relevant to the challenges faced on the ground:

Pre-deployment Considerations and Traveller Preparedness: Entry requirements, legal red flags, medication and alcohol restrictions, and what you should always check before stepping on the plane.

Journey Risk Management: Airport transfers, vehicle choices, and how to stay safe while on the move.

LGBTQ+ Travel Guidance: Understanding legal and cultural risks in regions with discriminatory laws or social attitudes.

Personal Security: Simple behaviours that keep you safer — from body language and route planning, to Cooper’s Colour Code and basic street smarts.

Accompanied By Security Teams: What it’s like travelling with close protection, including armoured transport and local protocols.

Checkpoint Awareness: How to identify legal vs. illegal checkpoints, how to behave, and what warning signs to watch for.

Information Security: From malware and ransomware to high-profile cybercrime, this module looks at how to secure your data, devices, and identity while abroad.

Conflict Management: Broken into three short sections, this module explores the DEFEND principle, OPEN PALMS de-escalation technique, and how to manage real-time confrontation calmly and effectively.

Kidnap for Ransom: Also split into three parts, this module explains what to do if you’re abducted — including how to establish a routine, maintain mental resilience, and increase your chances of a safe outcome.

The MARCH Principles (First Aid): How to handle major trauma using the MARCH framework, and how to quickly assess alertness using the AVPU scale — vital in an emergency.

Final thoughts — and where to learn more

No one expects trouble — but being prepared is what makes the difference. Whether you’re travelling to a low, medium or high-risk location, the same principle holds true: knowledge and mindset are your most reliable assets.
