When the IADC North Sea Chapter approached Reuzer — thanks to a connection from long-time collaborator Graeme Christie — they weren’t looking for just another animation. They needed something far more personal: a short, powerful film that captured the real-world impact of rig stacking on the communities that rely on a healthy offshore industry.

Fiscal uncertainty and shifting perceptions around oil and gas had led to rigs being stacked or idled, and while the headlines focused on energy policy, the human stories were being lost. Aviation crews, hotel staff, caterers, fabricators, scaffolders, maintenance teams — entire local economies feel the weight of these decisions. The IADC North Sea Chapter wanted that reality brought to life with authenticity, empathy, and clarity.

From the outset, we knew this project carried a different kind of weight. It wasn’t just another creative brief; it was a message on behalf of thousands of people whose lives and livelihoods are shaped by the uncertainty of the oil and gas sector. As a company working within this landscape too, we understand the pressures and challenges that sit behind the story — which only strengthened our responsibility to get it right.

Our aim wasn’t simply to inform, but to create something that genuinely connects with those watching. Every decision we made was driven by a desire to deliver something meaningful, emotive, and respectful to the people behind the statistics.

To craft the right tone, we partnered with Emmy Award–winning animator Simon Brooke and frequent Reuzer collaborator Sarah Herman, who supported the scripting. Together, we shaped a narrative that blended data with humanity — ensuring the statistics added weight without overshadowing the personal stories at the heart of the message.

We then produced a detailed storyboard, giving the IADC North Sea Chapter clarity around pacing and emotional flow, alongside a style test that showed how the final animation would look and feel.

Visually, the approach was intentionally restrained. We kept colours minimal, using the IADC’s strong red as an anchor, and brought the sky into the storytelling — at times heavy, clouded, and uncertain. Rather than overwhelm viewers with rapid visuals, the pacing was measured and deliberate, allowing the message to breathe.

To strengthen the connection with the intended audience, we selected a professional Scottish voice-over artist whose delivery carried both warmth and gravity. Subtle sound design supported the narration without ever competing with it — small details that collectively heightened the emotional pull of the film.

When the animation was released across the IADC North Sea Chapter’s social channels, the response spoke for itself. Feedback included the simple but powerful line: “Just one word… excellent.” But the comments that followed offered a deeper reflection of its impact.

Industry professionals described how accurately the animation captured the crisis unfolding across the UK energy sector. Many spoke about rigs, contractors, and skilled workers leaving for more stable regions — and how current fiscal policy, particularly the Energy Profits Levy, is accelerating that shift. They shared their lived experience of job losses, shrinking opportunities, and communities facing growing uncertainty. Several highlighted the urgent need for a realistic, expert-led transition plan, noting that the UK cannot afford to lose the very expertise required for its renewable energy future.

What stood out most was how strongly people felt the film represented their reality. Commenters praised it for bringing clarity and humanity to an issue that is often overlooked or misunderstood outside the industry. The message was strikingly unified: the North Sea’s future is at risk, and action is needed now.

For Reuzer, that reaction underscored why the project mattered so deeply. This wasn’t just an animation — it was an opportunity to amplify voices that too often go unheard and to honour the people at the heart of the UK’s offshore community. We’re sincerely grateful to the IADC North Sea Chapter for trusting us with its delivery.
