At Vantage Drilling, safe and effective work doesn’t begin when tools come out — it starts long before that.

This understanding sat at the heart of an e-learning course developed by Reuzer and hosted on the Reuzer Platform, focused on the Vantage Planning Process and anchored around the Step 8 Work Card.

One of the biggest challenges was helping learners reframe how they think about “starting work.” At Vantage, work doesn’t begin at step one — it begins at step seven. By the time a task reaches Step 8, a significant amount of planning, communication, and risk assessment has already taken place.

The course needed to make that clear, while also helping personnel understand their role in the process before they ever get hands-on.

The Challenge

The Step 8 Work Card is a critical tool, but like many procedural documents, it risks becoming a tick-box exercise if not delivered in the right way. Vantage wanted an engaging course that didn’t just explain what the work card is, but why it matters — and how every individual contributes to the planning process long before work begins.

The course also needed to connect with a wide range of roles across the organisation, ensuring the content felt relevant whether learners were offshore, onshore, or in a supervisory position.

The Approach

Reuzer worked closely with Vantage from the outset, scripting the entire course and sharing multiple drafts back and forth to ensure accuracy, clarity, and alignment with Vantage’s internal processes and language. This collaborative approach helped shape a course that felt authentic, practical, and immediately recognisable to the workforce.

The result was a 15-minute, scenario-based e-learning course that placed the Step 8 Work Card at the centre of the learning journey. Rather than presenting it as a static form, the course brought it to life through realistic scenarios, clean visual design, and a highly conversational voiceover.

Each section linked the planning process back to the learner, reinforcing the idea that safety and efficiency are built through early decisions, discussions, and shared responsibility — not just at the point of execution.

The course was hosted on the Reuzer Platform, Vantage Drilling’s learning platform of choice, allowing for easy assignment, tracking, and completion across the workforce.

Key Benefits

  1. Consistent delivery across the entire workforce, ensuring the Vantage Planning Process is understood the same way, every time
  2. Reduced cost per head, with a single upfront course development cost replacing repeated classroom delivery
  3. Full learner tracking and reporting, giving Vantage clear visibility of completion and engagement
  4. User-paced learning, allowing personnel to complete the course at a time that suits their role, shift pattern, or location

The Outcome

The course was assigned to over 300 Vantage personnel, delivering consistent, high-quality learning at scale. By reframing when “work starts” and clearly connecting planning steps to real-world scenarios, the course helped reinforce the importance of preparation, communication, and individual accountability within the Vantage Planning Process.

Most importantly, it supported Vantage’s commitment to proactive safety — ensuring personnel understand that by the time Step 8 is reached, the foundations for safe work have already been laid.
