At Reuzer, we’ve been fortunate to work with Transocean for many years. As a global leader in offshore drilling, their reputation for safety and innovation is second to none.

So, when they asked us to create a new e-learning course on dropped object prevention, we knew this was going to be something special — and we’re excited that this brand-new training experience will soon be rolling out to the Transocean team.

The Topic

Dropped objects remain one of the most common — and dangerous — hazards in offshore environments. Even a small tool, if dropped from height, can cause serious injuries or damage. Transocean wanted a course that wouldn’t just tick boxes, but genuinely engage learners, reinforce best practices, and help reduce risks across their operations worldwide.

The brief was clear but ambitious: design and develop a high-end, 40-minute e-learning course that will be visually rich, engaging, and packed with relevant, practical content — a course that is now nearing completion and will be released soon.

On top of that, the course is set to be delivered in four additional languages so that Transocean’s global workforce can benefit from it, wherever they’re based.

It was clear from the start: this wasn’t just an e-learning course. It was the development of a comprehensive training experience that will soon help inspire confidence, support behaviour change, and reflect Transocean’s industry-leading standards.

The Approach

We started with a blank sheet of paper and a lot of conversations. Working closely with Transocean’s subject matter experts, we storyboarded the entire course together. This collaborative phase laid the foundation for what will soon become one of the most engaging training modules in Transocean’s library.

Once the structure was in place, our focus shifted to visuals. Dropped object prevention isn’t the easiest topic to make “visually exciting,” but with the right creative approach, we knew it could be brought to life in a way that would be clear, memorable, and inspiring.

We combined high-end, life-like 3D animation with crisp 2D animated styles. This mix keeps the course dynamic, while ensuring complex ideas are communicated clearly. Instructional design plays a central role too — guiding learners through the content in a logical, confidence-building way.

To give the course its own identity, we developed a bespoke visual template. This wasn’t just for aesthetics; it sets the tone for a polished, professional training product that Transocean’s teams will soon be accessing across their global operations.

The Outcome

The course — now in its final stages and coming soon to the Transocean team — runs for 40 minutes and follows a clear, logical progression from start to finish. It tackles the subject from every angle, covering everything from the top 10 industry causes of dropped objects to the distinctions between static and dynamic risks.

Real case studies are woven throughout to ensure that when the course is released, learners won’t just receive theoretical knowledge. They’ll see the real-world consequences of dropped objects and understand exactly how Transocean’s preventative systems and initiatives — including DROPS Path and WorkSight — help uphold a culture of safety.

Accessibility remains a key focus. With translations into four additional languages, the course will soon be made available to crews around the world, ensuring consistent, high-quality learning wherever Transocean operates.

Reflections

This project has been a genuine partnership from start to finish. The collaboration during storyboarding has ensured the developing course aligns perfectly with Transocean’s needs and expectations.

Creatively, it’s been a joy to bring this material to life. Blending 3D and 2D animation with sharp instructional design has allowed us to deploy the full range of our skills. The result — soon to launch — is visually striking, practical, and impactful.

Most importantly, the course is on track to be delivered on time and on budget, meeting every objective set out at the start. For Transocean, it will soon become a valuable training tool that supports safer operations for years to come. For us, it’s another proud milestone in a long-standing partnership.

To Conclude

Dropped object prevention might not sound like the most glamorous subject, but in the offshore world, it’s absolutely vital. This upcoming course proves that with the right creative and instructional approach, even complex technical topics can be transformed into engaging learning experiences that genuinely improve safety.

For Reuzer, this project has been about more than creating an e-learning module. It’s about helping a trusted partner continue to lead the way in offshore safety — and we’re excited for the Transocean team to experience it soon.
