Personal Line of Fire

Transocean, a global leader in offshore drilling services, approached us to create a high-quality animation to educate its workforce on a critical safety concept known as the "Personal Line of Fire."
The objective was to produce an engaging, realistic, and visually striking animation that could effectively communicate the dangers associated with the “Personal Line of Fire” and demonstrate the correct procedures to avoid such hazards.
What is the ‘Personal Line of Fire’?
The “Personal Line of Fire” is a safety principle that focuses on the hazards that workers can create for themselves through their actions or positioning.
For example, a worker might over exert themselves when handling a heavy object such as a box protector, leading it to smash into them, causing a Personal Line of Fire injury.
This principle emphasises the importance of being aware of one’s body position and the potential paths of objects that could cause harm.
Understanding and internalising this concept is crucial for anyone working in environments where physical tasks are performed, as it directly impacts personal safety and the safety of others.
The style
To effectively convey the “Personal Line of Fire” concept, we chose a 3D animation style that allowed for detailed, realistic representations of offshore drilling environments and scenarios.
This approach was essential for several reasons:
Realism and Clarity: The 3D style enabled us to create life-like scenarios that mirrored the actual working conditions on Transocean’s rigs. We used fully lip-synced characters to deliver the narrative, which helped in making the animation relatable and engaging. The realism of the characters and environments ensured that the scenarios were instantly recognizable to Transocean’s workforce.
Matrix-Style Freeze Frames: To emphasize the critical moments where hazards could occur, we incorporated a “Matrix”-style freeze-frame effect. This technique allowed us to pause the action and zoom around the scenario in 3D space, visually identifying potential hazards before an incident took place. This cinematic approach not only captured attention but also made the safety hazards unmistakably clear.
Rewind and Corrective Action: After highlighting the hazard, we used a rewind effect to show what should have happened. This contrast between incorrect and correct actions reinforced the safety message and provided a clear, memorable learning experience.
Engagement techniques
To ensure that the animation was not only informative but also engaging, we utilized two characters—a male and a female—as narrators. They alternated in their roles, handing off narration to each other throughout the animation. This dynamic interplay kept the content fresh and engaging for the audience, preventing monotony and maintaining viewer interest.
By using two distinct voices, we also reflected the diversity of the workforce, making the animation more inclusive and relatable to a broader audience. The characters were designed to be approachable and professional, resonating with the company’s values and culture.
Duration and accessibility
The final animation was approximately 8 minutes long, striking the right balance between being comprehensive and concise. This duration allowed us to cover all necessary aspects of the “Personal Line of Fire” while keeping the audience’s attention throughout.
Given the global nature of Transocean’s operations, the animation was originally produced in English but was also subtitled in several other languages. This ensured that the content was accessible to all employees, regardless of their primary language, making the training universally applicable and effective.
Outcome and feedback
The animation was exceptionally well-received by Transocean. The feedback highlighted that it was not only the best animation they had ever commissioned but also a powerful tool for enhancing safety training across the company. The high level of realism, combined with the innovative use of 3D techniques and engaging narration, made the animation a standout success.
The clear depiction of real-life scenarios, coupled with the effective rewind and corrective action sequences, helped embed the safety principle more deeply into the company’s safety culture.
“We wanted something that looked fresh, visual and original. Something which was short sharp and straight to the point, the guys and girls at Reuzer knocked it out the park! Exactly how I envisaged it being.
Some initial feedback from the fleet was this is really really good, some of the best stuff like this we have seen, really good looking and very clear. Makes it easy to understand. Can’t ask for better than that, well done Reuzer.”
Graham Cameron, Transocean.
Conclusion
This project for Transocean showcases the effectiveness of high-quality 3D animation in safety training. By combining realistic scenarios, innovative visual techniques, and engaging narration, we created an animation that not only met but exceeded Transocean’s expectations.
The animation has become a benchmark for safety training within the company, contributing to a safer working environment and reinforcing Transocean’s commitment to operational excellence.
