Transocean, a leading offshore drilling contractor, approached us with a request to rebrand their offshore Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Orientation video.

This video was intended for individuals about to stay and work offshore, covering approximately ten different topics.

Transocean wanted something eye-catching and different to ensure the content was engaging and memorable for their workforce.

Project Goals

The goal of the project was to create an 8-minute long 3D animated video that included voice-over narration and sound effects. The video needed to be visually exciting, informative, and culturally sensitive, while effectively conveying a large amount of information. Transocean provided the script and entrusted us with the task of developing the visuals and coming up with new ideas to present the ten topics in a compelling way.

Approach

Our team brainstormed extensively to devise a structure that would visually represent the ten topics.

We settled on the concept of using a ‘diorama’—a miniature 3D scene that could encapsulate each topic. This approach allowed us to create a stylised and abstract visual style that was both realistic and engaging. We aimed to balance visual excitement with accuracy and informativeness.

To tie the various topics together, we decided to include a presenter who would introduce the film in an approachable and friendly manner. This presenter would help maintain a cohesive narrative and ensure the audience remained engaged throughout the video.

Storyboarding

We faced the challenge of determining how the diorama concept would work without being too restrictive. We decided to use objects within the diorama to represent the main subjects of each topic, zooming into them to introduce the subject before cutting away to related scenes. This approach provided the flexibility needed to cover all topics comprehensively.

We created a 3D sample of the diorama, envisioning each topic as an exhibition stand that the viewer would move through. This concept was illustrated in a storyboard, which helped us and Transocean visualise how the visuals would align with the script. The storyboard ensured everyone involved understood the project and facilitated breaking the work into manageable chunks during production.

We played with the scale, contrasting the real-world scale of the presenter with the miniature worlds of the dioramas. Together with Transocean, we adjusted the storyboard until it was clear and conveyed everything in the right way and spirit.

Production

With the voice-overs recorded, we moved on to producing the animation. We developed our lip sync pipeline further, using AI to assist with mouth and body movements. The animation featured a distinct and striking look, incorporating Transocean’s brand colors and graphical styles.

We used a bold blue background with the Transocean grid pattern along the ground and made the diorama scenes bright white, with splashes of Transocean’s yellow and blue colors. Creating characters and dioramas in Cinema 4D, we ensured all aspects were correct according to Transocean’s procedures and standards.

Working in this style involved overcoming challenges related to differences in scale within the 3D scenes. Rescaling multiple fully rigged characters to fit within the dioramas was a significant challenge, but we learned a lot in the process.

Outcome

The final product was a visually engaging and informative HSE Orientation video that successfully met Transocean’s needs. The video delivered a clear, impactful message about offshore safety, effectively combining statistics, real-world scenarios, and visual storytelling to engage the audience.

Transocean praised the project for its innovative approach, timely completion, and ability to convey important information in an engaging manner. The animation has since been integrated into Transocean’s broader safety training programs, ensuring offshore safety remains a priority for their workforce.
