From Pilot to Programme

Supervisors in the drilling sector are expected to lead safely, communicate clearly, and make sound decisions in high-risk environments.
Ensuring consistent supervisory standards across a geographically dispersed workforce presents a real challenge—particularly when access to classroom training is limited or inconsistent.
The IADC SAPC (Southern Arabian Peninsula Chapter) wanted to explore a modern, scalable learning solution that could support supervisory development across the region. Rather than committing immediately to a full training programme, the decision was taken to commission a pilot e-learning course to gauge engagement, relevance, and overall effectiveness.
The Pilot Approach
Reuzer was engaged to design and develop a single 10–15 minute pilot e-learning course focused on essential supervisory skills within the drilling sector.
The pilot covered a range of core topics critical to day-to-day supervision, including:
- Effective communication
- Body language and non-verbal communication
- Supervising work before, during, and after the task
- Leadership behaviours and situational awareness
- Safety ownership and accountability
The course was structured to be concise, practical, and directly relevant to real drilling operations—providing immediate value to supervisors while remaining accessible to learners with varying levels of experience.
Learning Design and Production
The pilot course combined strong instructional design with high-quality production values. Reuzer delivered a fully bespoke learning experience that included:
- 2D animated sequences to explain key concepts clearly
- Custom illustrations designed specifically for the programme
- Lip-sync characters used to introduce and summarise sections
- Professional voiceover recorded by experienced voice artists
All content was professionally scripted, then reviewed, verified, and approved in collaboration with IADC SAPC stakeholders before moving into production—ensuring technical accuracy, clarity, and consistency throughout.
A Distinctive IADC Look and Feel
To ensure the course felt like a natural extension of IADC’s existing materials, Reuzer developed a bespoke visual theme aligned to IADC branding. Custom templates, colour palettes, and illustration styles were created so the learning felt clearly associated with IADC, while still benefiting from Reuzer’s clean, engaging design approach.
This attention to branding helped position the course as a credible, industry-led training solution rather than a generic e-learning product.
Assessment and Platform Delivery
The pilot course included a formal end-of-course assessment, reinforcing key learning points and supporting knowledge retention.
The course is hosted on the Reuzer Platform, allowing access for organisations and individuals who may not have an internal learning management system. Learners can complete the course remotely and receive a certificate of completion, supporting both compliance and professional development requirements.
Results and Feedback
Feedback on the pilot course was extremely positive.
- Stakeholders consistently described the course as:
- Very comprehensive
- Clear and engaging
- Highly relevant to supervisory roles in the drilling sector
Importantly, feedback required very little refinement, with comments largely confirming that the course had achieved its objectives and delivered strong value to learners.
From Pilot to Programme
As a direct result of the pilot’s success, Reuzer was awarded the development of eight additional e-learning courses, expanding the programme into a nine-course supervisory training suite.
Each course will include an assessment and will act as a prerequisite to the next, creating a structured learning pathway that supports progressive skill development for supervisors working in drilling operations.
What’s Next
Over the coming months, Reuzer will design and produce the remaining eight courses, completing a comprehensive supervisory e-learning suite tailored specifically to the drilling sector.
This project has further strengthened Reuzer’s position within the drilling industry, particularly in the Middle East, and demonstrates the value of a well-executed pilot approach—turning a single course into a long-term, scalable learning partnership.
This project highlights Reuzer’s ability to:
- Deliver industry-specific supervisory training at scale
- Combine engaging animation with robust instructional design
- Support organisations without existing learning platforms
- Build long-term programmes through successful pilot delivery
A strong pilot. A clear endorsement. And a nine-course programme that will support supervisors across the drilling sector for years to come.
