Defining Area

NOV approached us with a clear need: demystify a complex but critical concept—area calculations—for their wellbore operations training.
The goal? Build the foundation for a broader “Wellbore Calculations” training suite, starting with a core 20-minute module that covered both the basics and some industry-specific applications.
Math isn’t everyone’s favourite topic, and technical audiences often have little time to spare. So the challenge was to simplify without dumbing down, and keep things visual, digestible, and relevant to real-world oilfield scenarios.
The Solution
We created an interactive e-learning course that tackled the fundamentals of calculating area in a way that felt anything but textbook. Starting with the basics—how to calculate the area of flat 2D shapes—we gradually introduced more complex forms, including irregular shapes and circles.
Along the way, we defined key terminology like diameter, circumference, Pi, and radius, carefully showing how each concept connects and builds toward practical applications.
Where things got really interesting was in contextualising this math for NOV’s audience. We explored how to calculate the area of a cross-section and how to determine the space taken up by one or more tubulars within casing or an open hole. These aren’t abstract math problems—they’re essential considerations in drilling operations.
The course featured full branding for NOV, and we designed a unique visual template that would serve as the foundation for future modules in the Wellbore Calculations suite. Every detail—right down to colours, fonts, and layout—was tailored to match NOV’s identity and tone.
Standout Features
AI-Driven Narration: Rather than relying on static voiceovers, we used AI-generated presenter characters to guide learners through the content. This gave the course a dynamic, modern feel, and allowed us to inject personality while maintaining clarity.
2D Animation: We brought abstract math to life through clean, technical animations. Complex ideas became visual, helping users grasp relationships and processes more intuitively.
Scenario-Based Learning: Learners weren’t just passive viewers. They were challenged throughout with interactive scenarios and immediate feedback, helping reinforce their understanding as they progressed.
Final Assessment: The course concluded with a scenario-driven final assessment, comprising five applied problems to test real-world comprehension—far more effective than a simple quiz.
The Outcome
The end result is a compact, engaging course that turns potentially dry content into a genuinely useful and approachable learning experience.
NOV now has a branded, scalable module that not only kicks off their Wellbore Calculations series but also sets the tone for how technical learning should feel—interactive, applied, and visually intelligent.
Watch this space for upcoming modules in the suite, from volume and capacity to fluid columns and Buoyancy.
