Culture Meets Clarity

When Helmerich & Payne (H&P) acquired our long-term client KCA Deutag in 2025, it opened the door to a unique opportunity: help introduce H&P’s workforce to a new way of doing things, while honouring the legacy of a company we’d worked with for years.
The result?
A short but powerful animation designed to bring two cultures together, while keeping safety at the heart of the message.
This was our first major project with H&P, and while there were plenty of new faces in the mix, we were delighted to be working alongside some familiar ones too. That balance—new and known, legacy and future—was exactly what the animation needed to capture.
A Cultural Bridge in Ten Minutes
The brief was clear but challenging: produce a 10-minute animation to support cultural integration across H&P’s global workforce. Specifically, the content needed to resonate with teams based in both Europe and the Middle East—two regions with distinct working cultures and communication styles. Clarity, empathy, and cultural awareness were key.
At the heart of the animation were H&P’s 10 Life Belts—core safety principles that guide day-to-day behaviour across the business. These Life Belts cover a wide range of essential practices: from driving safely and preventing dropped objects to lock-out tag-out procedures and mobile device usage on site.
Each Life Belt needed to be explained in a way that was fast, clear, and memorable. With only 10 minutes to play with—and an introduction and conclusion to fit in too—we had to keep each section snappy. The messaging had to land quickly, without ever feeling rushed or shallow.
Style Meets Substance
To hold the viewer’s attention and create maximum impact in a short time, we combined a range of visual media: real-life video, on-site photography, crisp 2D animation, detailed 3D visuals, and bold iconography. Each style served a purpose, and together they brought variety, energy, and depth to the piece.
But juggling that many formats is no small feat. The biggest challenge? Ensuring it all flowed naturally. We were hyper-aware of the risk that mixing styles could feel jarring or inconsistent. A slick visual transition here, a subtle bit of motion design there—we obsessed over the pacing, the sequencing, and the way each Life Belt was introduced to ensure the whole thing felt seamless.
One thing we were careful to avoid was overloading the screen with text. With a multilingual audience and Arabic translation in the mix, we focused instead on clean visuals and concise, spoken messaging—supported by professional voiceover and well-placed sound effects to add pace and polish.
New Brand, New Standards
Another layer of complexity came from the brand itself. H&P’s visual identity was new to us, and it was important that we aligned with it from the outset. Rather than risk misinterpretation, we created a set of internal Reuzer design standards based on H&P’s brand guidelines. These became our go-to reference point for everything from colour palette and typography to tone of voice and visual cues. That internal system helped ensure consistency, and it’s something we’ll be building on for future H&P projects.
Script development was a collaborative effort between our team and Sarah Herman, whose sharp, structured writing helped distil complex safety ideas into accessible, audience-friendly language. It was a joy to work with Sarah again and shape the narrative into something that could be easily absorbed, no matter where the viewer was based.
More Than a Training Tool
The final animation is more than a training tool—it’s a statement of shared values and a nod to the heritage of both companies. It speaks to safety, yes, but also to unity and clarity in the face of change. With Arabic translation included, the piece is already helping to set a consistent tone across a diverse global workforce.
And for us at Reuzer? This was a creative challenge that ticked all the right boxes—technical complexity, cultural sensitivity, and real-world impact. Best of all, it marked the start of a new relationship with H&P, built on the solid foundation of our past with KCA Deutag.
Here’s to what comes next.
