Meet KCA Deutag

With over 130 years of experience, KCA Deutag is one of the world’s leading drilling and engineering contractors, working onshore and offshore with a focus on safety, quality and operational performance. KCA Deutag operates approximately 110 drilling rigs in 20 countries, either directly or through affiliates, employing people in Africa, Europe, Russia, the Middle East, the Caspian Sea and Canada.

A platform partnership to be proud of

KCA Deutag was excited to be involved with Reuzer from the start. The organisation could recognise we had something different to offer and they wanted to get in on the ground floor to help shape the Reuzer Platform into something that was fit for purpose, designed uniquely around the safety-critical sector.

Every step of the way, KCA Deutag has been there, piloting new features, testing our system, and providing vital feedback to help us shape both our learning management system (LMS) and competence management system (CMS).

They’ve been gracious in providing honest feedback and understanding of Reuzer’s start-up journey. We both had our eyes on the same goal, and together we’ve made something so much better than we could have done alone.

Looking after low-bandwidth areas

One of the key issues KCA Deutag faced was the issue of low bandwidth in some of their remote rigs in UAE, Kuwait, and Saudi. We worked with them to fix it. That meant using server-side compression, adjusting image resolution across the platform, and building more logic into the way the matrix loads – it loads as you scroll down, rather than all at once.

And because of bandwidth issues, we had to create a progressive web app that would work offline for assessments. Stored in the cache of the device, an assessor simply tells the app which rig they’re on and it downloads all the relevant profiles. It means assessors can go out on the rig, fill in questionnaires on the app, take photos and videos related to the assessment, and have them all stored in the right place. When they get back to the office, they can sync it with the online platform in an instant. We also built in a ‘change assessor’ functionality, so anyone can pick up an in-progress assessment and take over from a colleague.

It was important for KCA Deutag for the platform to feel like an integral part of the business. That meant branding it for them, and ensuring all certificates and emails sent from the platform are branded too. We also made sure the platform was integrated with the business’s existing training management system.

Looking ahead

Reuzer has recently applied for a grant from Innovate UK, which if successful we’ll be using to add a second layer of authentication into the platform. Lots of users don’t have email addresses or smartphones, which makes logging in a problem. Currently, we have a Lite User profile option, where managers are responsible for uploading information on someone’s behalf. But we’ll be using the grant to develop a biometric login method which users can authenticate against.

We’re also excited to be in conversation regarding the translation of the entire platform into Arabic, to better serve many more of KCA Deutag’s users.

KCA Deutag is committed to improving its services and platforms, enabling users to have the best possible experience. The business has phased the rollout of its CMS and is currently adding 4,000 land-drilling users. And at the time of writing, they’ve completed 1,500 e-learning courses in just six weeks. Our ongoing partnership with KCA Deutag has really helped put Reuzer on the map and shaped the platform for the better.
